Holiday in Romania

19 June Bike to the Varatec monastery

Today we began hill down from the Petru voda pass. We followed the small river to go to the Monastries of Agapia (280 nuns) and Varatec (300 nuns). First, we came in a larger town called Targu neamt. We visited the agricultural market to buy fruit and water. We also bought a tape of popular Manelle Music (371 kB). This is mixture of Romania music with Turkish influences. Althoug the monastries are nice to visit, we would not recommend people on bike to make a detour to see these monastries. The painted monastries (see 21 June) are tens times more worth the effort. We choose a place to sleep from the Rough guide, called Hotel Filiorou, which indicated has pleasant rooms. However, the pension is burnt down two years ago. What's left is the hospitallity, two casute and a beautiful surrounding. We got a postcard from owners that try to sell the place.
