Holiday in Romania

22 June Bike to Ciocanesti

We said Goodbye to Minco in the morning and then continued our own way to the west along a highly frequented road to Campulung Moldovenesc, where we had a good lunch with fresh buttermilk (Lapte battu). We continued the road. This was running up a lovely valley. The road left the river and we had to climb a 1,096m pass. Once on top of this pass, we decided to cycle furher and try to cycle to Carlibaba, still some 40km away. The route here is good, although it was very hot. After Iacobeni, we went up into the Bistrita valley. I believe this was the most beautiful part of all our holiday. The area is very remote, while houses were still original. As the valley became smaller so came the forest closer to the road. When we finally arrived in Carlibaba, there appeared to be no place to sleep, although we got several times positive answers from people to whom we asked if there was any in Carlibaba. There was one pension, apparently ran by a Duth men, but he was in ….. Holland. Yes. As we did not have the force to climb the Prisslop pass (it was already 18:00h), we ate in Carlibaba and then cycled back 18km to Ciocanesti. Watch out: the Rough guide says that north of Carlibaba there is a hotel. Well not anymore. It is closed.
